    Position: Director of Estimating

    Scope of Position:

    1. The basic function of the Director of Estimating is to meet the established sales goals and growth objectives of the company and to plan and execute the necessary bidding activities to support and promote sales and corporate core values.
    2. Other basic functions include:
      • Establish estimating team goals with corporate close percentage requirements while maintaining corporate Gross Margin goals and expectations.
      • Provide oversite and performance management to the Estimating Department.
      • Analyze and approve all Proposals and Budget Preparation leaving the department and estimate projects as required.

    Reporting Relationships:

    1. The Director of Estimating reports directly to, and is fully accountable to the Vice President of Sales and Estimating.
    2. All Estimators and Assistants report directly to the Director of Estimating.

    3. EXPERIENCE
      • Required: Minimum of five years estimating experience in construction/commercial environment, preferably in steel and/or concrete construction projects.
      • Preferred: Managerial 2 years’ experience
    4. SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES
      • Ability to manage the performance of direct reports to achieve corporate goals.
      • Excellent knowledge of the Company’s industry and trends impacting its business.
      • Ability to strategically manage client’s expectations through the proposal process.
      • Ability to read, analyze and interpret engineering drawings and prepare material take-offs when required.
      • Excellent knowledge of the Company’s industry and trends impacting its business.
      • Ability to comprehend and perform business math calculations necessary to accurately prepare job estimates and quotes and calculate gross profit margins and associated costs.
    5. PHYSICAL
      • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by the employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
        • BODY POSITIONS:  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit for prolonged periods of time.  He/she may also be required to stand and/or walk for long periods of time while completing other duties and responsibilities.
        • BODY MOVEMENTS: The employee must have a full range of body movements including the use of his/her hands to finger, handle, and feel objects such as computer equipment. The ability to bend the body, to reach for objects, and to crouch when needed are also required.
        • BODY SENSES: The employee must have command of all five senses: sight, hearing, touch, smell and taste.
        • STRENGTH: The employee must have the ability to lift up to 50 pounds with regularity.
        • WORKING CONDITIONS: This position will be working primarily indoors in a construction environment, but also requires the employee to be in the field on a regular basis. From this movement, the employee will encounter varying weather conditions and temperatures. The normal auto travel hazards will apply. Travel will be in all types of weather including heavy rain and below freezing temperatures with snow conditions.

    Authority and Accountability:

    The Director of Estimating is given all authority necessary to:

    1. Strategically manage and control all aspects of the Estimating Department, achieving corporate sales and profitability goals.
    2. Obligate the company through the submission of proposals for all services provided by the company.
    3. Plan and execute estimates on projects which support M Bar C’s established sales objectives and develops new opportunities for additional growth, but within the budgeted limits.

    Responsibilities and Duties: 

    1. Strategic management of the department continually driving for improvement.
    2. Estimating activities are planned and executed on time and in line with corporate goals.
    3. Responsible for providing professional management to direct reports through communicating, planning, organizing, staffing, controlling and leading in order to attain corporate mandates and goals.
    4. Corporate sales goals, profit and close percentages are set and achieved through team management.
    5. Existing corporate relationships and potential customers are developed through quotes, anticipating needs, resolving concerns and complaints, and providing technical support.
    6. Oversee the work of the estimators for consistency and compliance with department standards and review cost books and proposals for all site considerations and assumptions prior to submission.
    7. Arranging site visits during the estimating process to reduce errors and ensure consistency with corporate goals, accountability and coaching.
    8. Verify that all project specific documents (RFP’s an RFI responses) have been thoroughly reviewed prior to estimate submittal to the client.
    9. Develop strategies for proposals with the Operations team.
    10. Assist and support project and business development.
    11. Champion interdepartmental integration and promote an entire team atmosphere through internal coordination with Operations and Accounting.
    12. Evaluate large project portfolios, costing and presentations that represent corporate values and goals.
    13. Evaluate, update and enforce procedures consistent with M Bar C Policy.
    14. Conduct Employee reviews and maintain team feedback for growth.
    15. Maximize throughput and performance of Estimating team based on team skill sets. (Hire and replace team members as necessary)
    16. Maintain budget vs. actual tracking (Post Mortem) and if appropriate, make systematic alterations.

    Performance Criteria:

    The Director of Estimating shall be deemed to be performing in an acceptable manner when the following have been accomplished:

    1. A 10% or greater close percentage is maintained based on all produced estimates from the department.
    2. Department error percentages are at or below 1% of contract value
